I love this TEDx video! It’s so true, and so important. For you and your kids too, let me tell you why…
What is the number one quality we need to be Bilingual for Fun parents, or Bilingue per Gioco parents, as we like to say here?
Being bilingual may be?
Certainly not! As we have seen, with plenty of details, non native parents can raise bilingual children, sometimes they even get better results than native parents!
What is it then????
It’s being able to play with our children.
Being able to play, have fun together, learn together through shared experiences, emotional bonds and playful activities. Sitting down on the floor and playing with them, the way they like to play.
If we can’t play with our children, we can’t pass our passion on, we can teach them (if we try really hard) but we can’t make them desire to learn.
Now this video doesn’t talk about parents. It talks about work.
Yes being a parent is a hard job but that’s not where I’m going. This video talks about what happens when a society stops playing with their kids.
It’s interesting. And entertaining. And, guess what, playful!
If I still haven’t convinced you about the importance of play, he will…
P.S.
I cheated a little bit, the real number one condition one needs to be a Bilingual for Fun parent is being a parent. However, a Bilingual for Fun grandparent, uncle, aunty or educator can still do wonders!
